WCD_Logo_4c_2 By Andrea Kirsten-Coleman Today is World Cancer Day.  Through the theme Cancer – Not beyond us, World Cancer Day 2015 emphasizes the need for taking action and implementing what we already know to push the global fight against cancer to a whole new level.  It is a unique opportunity to emphasize that much more can be done at the individual, community, and government levels to harness and mobilize solutions – solutions that are not beyond us. We asked some of our Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Ambassadors, and noted business leaders, why they think the fight against cervical and breast cancer is within our reach. Bethlehem Alemu, founder and Managing Director of soleRebels, an Ethiopian footwear company. “I believe that solutions to cervical and breast cancer are within our reach because I know the strength of women.  In my business, I employ and train marginalized women who have been through tough times and have come out stronger at the other end.  Given the right information and access to early-detection programs, women will find the strength to take action against the disease, and their children, families, employers, and communities will reap the rewards.” Strive Masiyiwa, Executive Chairman and Founder, Econet Wireless. “The fight against breast and cervical cancer is not beyond us; we have the mobile technology in our hands to spread awareness about the disease and to help people take action through SMS and social media in sub-Saharan Africa.  It could simply be one woman reminding another through an SMS to make a screening appointment, or a school reminding a mother of her daughter’s scheduled HPV vaccination, or a girl informing her friends about a school-based HPV vaccination that can stop cervical cancer in its tracks.  It’s a way that just a few characters can truly count.” Want to learn about World Cancer Day?  Follow the conversation on Twitter by using the hashtags #WorldCancerDay and #NotBeyondUs.
