From the Road: Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Visits Botswana

Posted by On June 25, 2015
By Andrea Kirsten-Coleman Last week Dr. Doyin Oluwole, Executive Director of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon and Dr. Bill Steiger, Managing Director, traveled to Botswana for a routine check-in to assess progress of the implementation of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon activities in the country. While there they visited one of the See-and-Treat sites in Tsopeng clinic, Lobatse and paid courtesy calls to the President’s Emergency Programme for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and CDC leadership, Honorable Minister of Health Dorcas Makgato and the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Shenaaz El-Halabi. Cervical cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer mortality among women in Botswana as well as the most frequent cancer among Batswana women, accounting for about a quarter of all female cancers in Botswana. In 2009 the U.S Government through President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Botswana-University of Pennsylvania Partnership (BUP), funded an innovative See- and-Treat pilot project aimed at improving cervical cancer screening in Botswana and expanding access to treatment for Batswana women. In 2012 Botswana received a five-year grant of $3 million from PEPFAR as part of the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon (PRRR) initiative.
