Bill Steiger, Chief Program Officer at Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon®, is the featured speaker for the Texas de Peru (TDP) Fiesta del Sol Gala on October 15 in Dallas, Texas.
Texas de Peru was formed as a cooperative effort of the Texas Medical Community to leverage our collective strength, resources and expertise to improve healthcare in the High Andes of Peru.
Dr. Steiger will provide insights on global initiatives to prevent, screen for, and treat women’s cancers, and describe the reasons for the expansion of Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon’s programs to South America.
In advance of the August TDP Mission, Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon donated equipment to perform cryotherapy, which is a minimally invasive treatment used for localized pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions. The TDP physicians conducted training on the machines for the Kausay Wasi Clinic team, and used them to treat women’s gynecological conditions during the August mission trip.
Dr. Steiger accompanied TDP on this mission that cared for women at the Kausay Wasi Clinic outside of Cusco. Dr. Steiger also met with M.C. Julio César Espinoza Latorre, the Regional Health Director for Cusco, and members of his staff to understand the local needs concerning cervical and breast cancer.
Dr. Steiger also met with Guido del Prado, the Director of the Kausay Wasi Clinic, and Kevin Briggs, President of TDP, to identify strategies to address the incidence of cervical cancer in the region. Texas de Peru’s approach will focus on the use of cryotherapy equipment by the trained team at the clinic; mobile campaigns throughout the local communities to screen for and treat cervical cancer; and potentially a vaccination program against the human papillomavirus (HPV), to prevent new cases of cervical cancer.
Join us for a special night of dining, music and dancing to benefit the TDP medical missions to Peru. Tickets and more information are available at www.texasdeperu.org.
